Fred Breithut (1926-2010)

Celebrating its 33rd year of service and collaboration with the greater Long Island community, School - Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) is a registered 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, founded by Frederick Breithut in 1984. Since its inception, SBPLI has positively impacted tens of thousands of high school students by providing mentoring, scholarships, internships and job opportunities with over 100 Long Island companies.

In 1999, Fred’s vision brought the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Program to Long Island. The success of the program speaks for itself. From eight high schools participating in 1999, the FIRST® Program on Long Island has grown to over 100 elementary and middle school teams and 50 high school teams participating in 2013. In addition, over $7.5 million in college scholarships have been awarded to Long Island high school seniors participating in FIRST®.

Fred Breithut spent decades working to build a better future for Long Island's young people. As a teacher and principal, Fred was determined that students should have a broader view of the world than only what they were experiencing in the classroom. Among all of his accomplishments, LI FIRST® Robotics was Fred’s “crowning achievement,” for it captures the teaming of high school students with teachers, parents, mentors and business professionals in a curriculum that represents real world/hands-on problems with engineering-developed technical solutions.

Fred was frequently recognized for his service to the Long Island community during his life. While his untimely death in 2010 left those who knew him with a profound sadness, his legacy and his dreams live on and continue to influence so many.

Fred was known for his quick wit, innovative thinking, compassion and leadership and we are privileged to have known him and learned from him...and he is certainly missed!
